A <new> way to view XML data on the web

About the site

The site has two main goals:

The scripts on this website retrieve XML data from other websites on-the-fly (on your behalf) and then provide a top-down reorganized view of the contents of that file. The data is reorganized by the number of times the XML elements repeat within the file. This can produce interesting, summary information along with tables that provide a sort of “see-all-the-data-at-once” view of the file’s contents.

One of the primary benefits of looking at XML data in this manner is the ability to find missing data or obvious anomalies. Because XML files are presented serially, it is sometimes difficult to match up element content from identical elements across the file. By restructuring the XML data into sortable tables, you can view the content of identical XML elements in a single table column regardless of their original location in the XML file. Missing content can be easily discovered by sorting the columns. Anomalous content can be found by reviewing the tabular data for consistency. For example, if a column only contains acronyms, but one cell contains an email address, it indicates a probable error. When the XML data is presented in tables, it is generally easy to spot these anomalies.

XML files that are attribute rich are currently not producing the same results. If you find little or no results from the XML files you enter, it is likely because the data in the file is primarily stored in XML attributes. Future upgrades of the scripts will focus on attributes.

Providing this alternative view of XML data will hopefully:

Please go ahead and submit as many different XML files as you can.

In addition to providing an alternative view of inidividual XML files on the web, XML Datasets is a web application built to demonstrate a potential way to share and advertise XML data and document files on the web with a very low threshold of effort for individuals and organizations to add their files or any http:-available XML file to the XML Datasets repository. It then provides everyone with the ability to know about that specific XML file, its document type, and its website.

Information collected and its use

Information collected on this site (e.g., the XML file web site address you type in) is re-shared with other users of this website and visitors and re-users of http://www.twitter.com/XMLDatasets. Since one of the main goals of this site is to provide for the sharing of XML data and repository information with the Internet community at large, the URL information you are providing helps others find valuable XML data on the web. Thanks for helping out!

Additionally, when you click on [Websites] or [DocTypes] (on the top left corner of each page), you are able to see places where you and other visitors have submitted XML URLs to this site.
